Mumbai, Nov. 14 -- In 2013, in the wake of an increase in the number of crimes being committed against women, Farhan Akhtar launched a social initiative called MARD - Men Against Rape and Crime.
Over the next few months, the actor-film-maker used the initiative to spread awareness about gender equality and instill respect towards women. Now, it seems, his efforts have caught the attention of the United Nations (UN) Women, an organisation dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. For their initiative, HeForShe, the actor has been appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia. Confirming the news, Farhan says, "I am honoured to serve UN Women as a Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia.
This gives me and our initiative an added impetus to work towards a more gender, equal India and world." As part of his new role, Farhan will spread the word about the UN initiative.
He adds, "I am a supporter of the UN Women's HeForShe campaign and the role men and boys can play in stopping crime against women, and working towards gender equality. Through this new partnership I want to call on all the men and boys to be a catalyst for change and through our actions create a value system to end gender disparity."
