Dad will write for me: Farhan Akhtar

The multi-talented Farhan Akhtar has often been asked when his father — writer Javed Akhtar — will pen a script for him.

In July, 2013, after the veteran said in an interview to a tabloid, "…I hardly have any film for the last one year. I have been sitting jobless…," the pressure mounted even further.

But there has been no progress since. We caught up with Farhan, before the release of his next film, to ask him what the status of his father’s script is, among other things.

You have a legendary writer at home. Why don’t you get him to write for you?
Both Zoya (Akhtar; sister) and I have constantly been telling him to write another script for a while. But, at the end of the day, how he wants to go about it is his decision entirely. It would be great if he writes for us. I don’t think he is avoiding us. I guess he’s just waiting to be inspired by something.

Why have you kept yourself away from writing lyrics for film songs?
I honestly haven’t thought of that at all. I feel writing lyrics for a film song requires a certain expertise in writing poetry. It requires mastery over language; you need to be able to express yourself in different ways and also be metaphoric at times. I don’t think I have the experience to do that.

Is there any subject you want to explore as an artiste?
At this moment I don’t think I can do anything more. But I would hope that as time progresses, there will be more things I feel excited about. I guess that is a part of life. Either you do things for professional reasons or for personal satisfaction.

You are now concentrating on acting and have three films lined up. Could you throw some light on the characters you are playing?
I can only talk about Zoya’s film, which we will start shooting for in May. There are many films that we areproducing, and Zoya’s film is one of them. As and when we decide, we will make formal announcements. I would really like to leave that joy of discovery for you all, when you watch us. It’s too early to talk about the details of the film when we haven’t started shooting yet. But I am quite excited about what we are doing in the film.

What made you take up Shaadi Ke Side Effects?
I found the script very engaging, to start with. I found it entertaining.  It reminded me of the kind of movies that Hrishikesh Mukherjee used to make; films about middle class families. The problems are really small but the characters tend to over-complicate the issue. I thought that it would make for a very entertaining, tongue-in-cheek view on the institution of marriage.

Have you experienced something like this in your own married life?
No, not really. The events are completely fictional. But it is relatable in terms of the dynamics of a relationship. Every relationship, be it a married or an unmarried couple, sees days when there are certain degrees of differences. There are things a couple doesn’t see eye to eye about. How you deal with it is very, very important.
