New Delhi, Aug. 21 -- With so many tight budget films making the rounds, the forerunners of Hindi cinema seem to have taken it on themselves to support these small fries. Be it Shah Rukh Khan being present at the launch of an upcoming political drama or Vikamaditya Motwane supporting a documentary, tinsel town seems to be busy spreading the joy around.
"A celebrity can endorse a film for many reasons. Firstly, they might be close to the person who is producing the film and that is why they want to attach their name to it. Secondly, they might believe in the project. Also, they might want to give a newcomer a chance," says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Publicity put aside, can this A-lister endorsement actually enhance the fate of the film? "It does not help the fate of the film, but it gets the film in the public mind. It is more talked about and the focus on it increases," says trade analyst Komal Nahta.
Known for his meaningful content in films, director Vikramaditya Motwane recently shot a promotional video for an upcoming documentary. This video promises to make the documentary very different from others in the genre. "I saw this film and loved it. Then we decided to support this film. The film requires a push. People will come to see it, if they know about the film," he said.
Shah Rukh Khan
Shah Rukh Khan was recently present at the launch of an upcoming political satire starring Anupam Kher. He has also associated his name with actor-director Saahil Prem's upcoming film. "I don't think anyone can promote anyone... work speaks. When I was new, there were talented directors like Rakesh Roshan, Yash Chopra ... they promoted me, if I can use that word," Shah Rukh said at the launch.
Be it an athletic, small-budget film or Vikas Bahl's Chillar Party, Salman Khan takes it up on himself to support these low budget ventures. "People make small films with a lot of passion, they put their own money in it and if these films are not supported, then they would never see the light of day, and hence, a lot of money is lost," Salman said at a music launch of one such film. The actor also recently unveiled the first look of Kamal Sadanah's directorial debut.
Even though she has a star- studded bonanza hitting the screens soon, director-producer Farah Khan took out the time to be present at the launch of an upcoming dance film recently. "Its amazing. Our country is starting to accept all forms of dancing," she said.
Anurag Kashyap is no stranger to tight budget films. From directing some memorable films, he has also co-produced many significant films devoid of starry names.
The filmmaker recently associated his name with a documentary.
