Mumbai, June 11 -- After a long time, the doyen of Indian cinema, Dilip Kumar stepped out in public for what was easily a night to remember.
The launch brought together the creme de la creme of Bollywood, who gathered at a suburban, fivestar hotel to pay homage to the legendary actor. Hosted by film-maker Karan Johar, the red carpet saw celebrities both from yesteryear and the new era, who went on to provide their insight into the life of arguably Indian cinema's most loved and appreciated actor.
Many celebrities took to the stage to share their feelings about the actor. Aamir Khan recited a poem penned by Prasoon Joshi, while veteran actor Dharmendra narrated stories of his friendship with Dilip saab and, later, even broke into a jig with him.
Amitabh Bachchan read out a few passages from the book, which has been helmed by Udaya Tara Nayar, a close friend of the family and veteran journalist. The evening also saw performances by singers Shaan and Javed Ali, who crooned a few of the legendary actor's hits, such as 'Suhaana safar' and 'Maang ke saath tumhara'.
For the unveiling of the book, Dilip saab was escorted on stage by Bachchan and Aamir, who, along with Saira Banu, stayed by the actor's side throughout the night. Writer Javed Akhtar aptly said, "We can say to the generations to come that we lived in the era of Dilip Kumar."
Madhuri Dixit and Priyanka Chopra, too, spoke about the actor. Lata Mangeskhar, known to be close to the veteran actor, had to give the event a miss due to health issues.
