The Indian music industry has seen many musicians making it big and then fading away with time, but then there are some composers who manage to make a solid comeback. Popular music composer Anu Malik seems to belong to the latter category.
Malik was one of the most sought-after composers in the 1990s and early 2000s, but since the past 10 years, he wasn’t getting any good offers. But this year, Malik is back on the music scene with his score for actor Ayushmann Khurrana’s upcoming film.
“I am thankful to the listeners who are appreciating the music of this film and are welcoming me with open arms the second time,” he says, adding, “This is my comeback and rebirth as a music director because I believe a true composer is one who scores the entire album and not just one or two songs for a film.”
His last hit score — Main Hoon Na (2004) — came out a decade back, after which, his songs in other films didn’t fare that well. While he kept himself busy with other projects like judging reality shows, the 54-year-old ran out of Bollywood projects. “Everyone goes through highs and lows. I went through my worst time 10 years ago, when after Main Hoon Na, I did not have proper work. People used to ask ‘Why is Anu Malik not making any songs?’ But instead of getting frustrated, I used that pain to improve myself and work harder,” he says.
Malik adds that composing music for a big banner film after running out of good projects was not an easy job. Apart from facing stiff competition from current composers, he also had to keep in mind the taste of the young audience. “The biggest challenge for me was that I had to battle it out with my age. But the good thing is that I am now sharing a position in the music charts with several young musicians,” he says.
