Alia upset after Doordarshan decides against telecasting Highway

Alia Bhatt is upset over Doordarshan not telecasting her film, Highway (2014). Imtiaz Ali's Highway, that also featured Randeep Hooda in a pivotal role, received critical appreciation and also scored big at the ticket windows.

Initially, it was reported that the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) had decided against it, owing to its reference to child sexual abuse. However, earlier this week, the board denied having anything to do with the decision.

Alia’s character, Veera, was shown to be sexually abused by her uncle at a young age. The actor feels that speaking up about such issues is the need of the hour. "Doordarshan caters to a family audience that is sensitive to a certain type of cinema. I understand that, but I believe that child sexual abuse does occur, and not only with girls, but boys as well. Every child should know these things, as that would only protect them," says Alia, adding, "More often than not, children don’t know what’s happening with them when they are being abused. Educating them might just help."

She further adds, "Isn’t this (child sexual abuse) the reason why every parent keeps telling his or her child that they should not talk to strangers? And the children keep asking why they should not. Shouldn’t kids be provided answers?"
