Kalyan Jewellers have finally responded to the demands of the activist group and ensured that the ads will not publish anywhere.
The advertisement, which had Aishwarya posing as a “maharani” while a dark-skinned skinny child is trying to hold up an umbrella above her head didn’t go down too well with anyone! Not only is it racist, it also promotes child slavery!
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s publicist replied the following to the activists:
“Dear Farah Naqvi, Nisha Agrawal, Enakshi Ganguly , Bharti Ali, Madhu Mehra, Shantha Sinha, Harsh Mander and Mridula Bajaj,
On the onset we would like to thank you on drawing our attention to the observation of the perception of the advertisement. Here is an attachment of the shot taken by somebody during the shoot. The final layout of the ad is entirely the prerogative of the creative team for a brand. However shall forward your article as a viewpoint that can be taken into consideration by the creative team of professional working on the brand visual communication.

Well, we think Aish should have apologized and responded herself instead of her publicist! After all, the open letter was directly to Mrs. Bachchan! May be she couldn’t care less…
So once this statement came out, even Kalyan Jewellers posted on Facebook:
“With regard to the item Open letter to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: This ad you figure in is insidiously racist, the creative was intended to present the royalty, timeless beauty and elegance. However, if we have inadvertently hurt the sentiments of any individual or organization, we deeply regret the same. We have started the process of withdrawing this creative from our campaign.”
