Mumbai, April 30 -- The end of the year has some big releases lined up for the likes of Arjun Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor and Aamir Khan. With a battle for box-office success coming up, we ask trade experts to predict who will emerge on top.
Ranbir's Bombay Velvet will release first - on November 28. A week later, Arjun's Tevar and Abhishek's All Is Well will hit the theatres together. Then, on December 19, Aamir's much-awaited P.K. is slated to release. The latter enjoys the advantage of no other film being slotted for release till mid-January.
Trade analyst Vinod Mirani says, "It's suicidal to release your film immediately after Aamir's. No one lines up a release around a big Khan movie opening. The real battle is between Ranbir and Arjun, because while Ranbir has seen a good run, Arjun has just had a hit with 2 States. If both these films do well, Abhishek's release will be affected the most."
According to film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi, "It's an unfair battle for Arjun because he's competing with Ranbir, who's his senior. However, it will be interesting to see them fight it out as Ranbir's is a film for the classes, and Arjun's is an out-and-out commercial venture."
He adds that Abhishek, too, has a fair chance, even though his last few hits (Dhoom:3, 2013, and Bol Bachchan, 2012) were multi-starrers.
John Abraham's Welcome Back had also been planned for a December 19 release, but Rathi says, "The makers will surely push it to January. It's an announcement waiting to happen." Trade expert Amod Mehra says that it is the "norm in our industry to not launch another film following a big release, because all the theatres are booked for two weeks". He adds, "When Ek Tha Tiger (2012) released, no other film came out the week after. We expect every big star's film to get a good opening, even if it turns out to be a flop eventually, like Jai Ho."
