Bollywood Stars: Break ke Baad!

Aamir Khan

Mumbai, May 9 -- The next time you watch Ranbir Kapoor, Aamir Khan or Shah Rukh Khan on the big screen, it'll be after a gap of a year or so.

While SRK's last release was Chennai Express in August last year, his next, Happy New Year, will hit screens this October. Similarly, Ranbir's last release was Besharam in October, 2013, and his next, Bombay Velvet will release in November.

"Maintaining a gap between releases is a good thing. If a star has too many releases within short gaps, it will only lessen fan craving," says filmmaker Vipul Shah, whose next project, Holiday, stars Akshay Kumar. The film will see Akki's return after Boss (October, 2013).

"A gap helps curiosity levels go up. Plus, we are living in the days of media boom, so stars want to avoid the risk of getting overexposed," says trade expert Taran Adarsh.

Ajay Devgn's next, Singham 2, will hit the screen in August. His last release was Satyagraha that released in the same month the previous year. Ranbir's Jagga Jasoos, which was slated to release in October this year, has been delayed and not slotted for next year.

Explains exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi: "From the trade angle, it directly affects the economy of film business as you can't expect a 100-crore film without a big star. Probably that's why we haven't seen big money spinners after Dhoom:3."

Talking of Dhoom:3, Aamir's next, P.K. (which was to release in June but was pushed ahead since he got busy with his TV show) will release on December 19, a year after the Katrina starrer.

But what about the popular adage, 'out of sight, out of mind'? "It doesn't hold true in today's times. Earlier, stars would have 3-4 releases a year but during those times, there wasn't a media overdose. Plus, now, you have social networking portals such as Twitter, Facebook etc. which keep stars in public memory (even when they don't have films coming up)," says Shah.

Rathi maintains that since big stars "have a responsibility towards their fans", a gap means "quality control" which is important.
