Known to extend their support to good cinema, Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan will soon be hosting a special screening of a documentary directed by their friend, Academy Award-winning director Megan Mylan. Scheduled to be shown at a suburban studio on November 15, the eight-minute documentary is titled After My Garden Grows. The screening will be followed by a dinner at the couple’s Bandra residence.
A source close to the duo reveals, “Kiran met Megan when the latter was in India for her documentary, Smile Pinki (2008). Since then, the two have been in touch. When Kiran got to know that Megan will be in the country for this documentary, she told her that she would organise a screening and call all her friends to watch it. She also loved its concept, as it revolves around the empowerment of young girls in rural India.”
After My Garden Grows is the story of Monika, a rural Indian teenager growing food to feed her family in a tiny rooftop garden, and how she finds her own independence.
The source adds that Kiran wants as many people as possible from her circle to watch the film and support it. On the list of attendees are film-makers Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani and Karan Johar, among others. The source says, “This is just a friendly gesture by the couple. And once they are at the couple’s residence, everyone will get a good chance to interact with Megan over dinner.”
When contacted, the spokesperson of the couple confirmed the news.
