A few points to ponder...

* Met with a few think tanks of the film industry a couple of days ago and the general feeling was that the spate of releases would slow considerably in 2010. The global meltdown has affected the corporates largely. Projects in the pipeline or in the under-production stages would see the light of the day this year, while those awaiting the green signal [read, yet to take off] would have to wait till the corporates feel the time is conducive enough to start their fresh lot of movies.

* The business has shown an upward trend since the past few weeks and I genuinely feel that the business will only escalate this year. The weeks ahead are chock-a-block with new films - big, medium-budget and low cost. Post CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA and RAAZ - THE MYSTERY CONTINUES, subsequent releases like LUCK BY CHANCE, VICTORY, BILLU BARBER, DELHI 6 and SHORTKUT should attract audiences in hordes. So let's be optimistic!

* A leading corporate entity [name withheld] is ready to expand its horizons. The corporate entity has already made a name for itself and has already got an approval of Rs. 500 cr. to invest in production of films. In fact, the corporate house has already started a string of medium-budget films to test the waters.

* Eros is ready to start 2009 with a bang. 2008 wasn't too prosperous for the Lullas of Eros, but 2009 should be a year to reckon with. Their line up of films include BILLU BARBER [13th February], KAMBAKKTH ISHQ [29th May], Saif's home-production with Imtiaz Ali [26th June], ALADIN [June/July], VEER [November] and a few more biggies that are in the pipeline. UTV too is ready to announce its line up of 2009.

* A leading distributor pointed out a significant change in cinema-viewing pattern. Till some time back, everyone felt that the audiences were more inclined towards metros-centric themes, but the super-success of RAB NE BANA D JODI and GHAJINI has proved that [a] Desi subjects are in and [b] Comedy is not the only mantra for success. Interesting observation indeed!
