Every year, there are several award ceremonies that reward the best in Bollywood. But here’s an award function which has a different agenda. The Ghanta Awards — a ceremony that’s quite similar to the Razzies for Hollywood, believes in rewarding the worst in Bollywood. In their third edition this year, they plan to just make it bigger and better.
Started by film critic and filmmaker Karan Anshuman and media professional Prashant Rajkhowa, the Ghantas — as they are popularly known, like other film awards — have neatly divided their categories into worst film, worst actor, worst song, worst director and WTF Was That? Ask Karan the reason behind this initiative and he says, “Let’s face it, Bollywood makes some bad movies. Nine out of 10 films are simply awful. And if you can have five mainstream award ceremonies celebrating that one film out of 10, why not an award show acknowledging the rest? Of course, it’s a different story that many of our winners often overlap.”
It was back in 2011, which was the 30th year of the Razzies, that the duo “felt terrible that they hadn’t acknowledged Bollywood in a similar way, considering how much more prolific it was at producing garbage than Hollywood.” Karan says, “So we got in touch with them to start an Indian edition, got no response and decided to create our own.”
The jury that comprises film critics Rajeev Masand, Sudhish Kamath, Sahil Rizwan, and Karan, gives out the nominations and the winners are finally decided through public voting on their website. And what is the basis of these nominations? Karan answers, “Big, films with big stars that were awful in our jury’s opinion essentially make the list. Smaller films get away because no one watches them, and giving them an award would just make the makers feel worse.”
“The categories reflect regular award shows, only substituting ‘worst’ for ‘best’. “We do have two special categories: WTF was That, which highlights the most inane logic/scenes/moments in films, and then there’s That’s Anything But Sexy such as Esha Gupta stripping naked because of ghost cockroaches in Raaz 3D (2012),” he says.
