Bollywood Directors: No Phones please!

By Hindustan Times

New Delhi, March 25 -- Directors are increasingly using sync sound for their films, and prefer that mobile phones be switched off on the sets.

In order to avoid unnecessary retakes, director Shakun Batra, who's working on Short Term Shaadi with Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan, set the rule that anyone caught with his phone ringing on the set would have to cough up a fine, starting at R1000. However, some days ago, Batra's own phone was caught ringing, and he treated his entire unit to drinks. "Before we roll, an announcement is made to mute the phones," says Shakun.

When asked on how the rule that he made, slipped out of his own mind, the director says he wasn't around when the announcement was made. "But there are no exceptions, even if the rule breaker is the same person who made them," he says.
