Bollywood couples with a twist!

Unusual lead pairs always generate interest and curiosity among the audiences, mainly to find out how great the on-screen chemistry of a pair will be. Last week’s release, Aatma, had one such unusual pairing of Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bipasha Basu. Along with Aatma’s lead pair, we look at other few odd pairs from B-Town who will hit silver screens this year.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui (39) and Bipasha Basu (34)
Film: Aatma
What’s new: Ever since the cast list of Suparn Varma’s horror-psychological thriller became public, the pairing raised several eyebrows — and for a good
reason. While Nawaz is the new poster boy of ‘meaningful/parallel’ cinema (remember the Gangs Of Wasseypur series?; 2012), the sultry Bipasha has tended to stick to glamourous roles so far. So, it hardly comes as a surprise that their casting has created a lot of buzz.
What’s interesting: Both actors come from completely different film backgrounds, so their pairing seems exciting.

Sunny Deol (57) and Kangana Ranaut (26)
Film: I Love New Year
What’s new: When Sunny started off his Bollywood career with his mega hit, Betaab, way back in 1983, Kangana wasn’t even born. But now, as Dharmendra’s son teams up with the young actor, who is less than half his age, you just can’t miss the oddness between the film’s lead actors. And the fact that they star opposite each other in an out-and-out romantic venture only makes the pairing weird.
What’s interesting: It will be nice to see brawny Sunny match up to Kangana’s petite avatar.

Rajinikanth (62) and Deepika Padukone (27)
Film: Kochadaiyaan
What’s new: To start with, consider the vast age difference between Rajini and Deepika. In addition to that, while Deepika has constantly been a part of some of the most glamourous films in Bollywood, the mega star has been extremely choosy with his handful of films which mostly carry some kind of social message. The Om Shanti Om (2007) girl bagged the 3D venture after their other project, Rana, got shelved due to Rajini’s ill health.
What’s interesting: Rajini has been directed by his daughter Soundarya in the film, which is supposedly India’s first film that has been shot in the 3D motion capture technology.
Unusual meter: 9/10

Sanjay Dutt (53) and Prachi Desai (24)
Film: Policegiri
What’s new: Sanjay is known for his rough, menacing roles but he will be seen romancing a much-younger and demure leading lady, Prachi. Also, Sanjay has been active in Bollywood since early ’80s while Prachi is just starting out. However now, Sunil Dutt and Nargis’s son has formed quite an unlikely pair with Prachi, who is yet to find a firm foothold in B-Town.
What’s interesting: It will be Sanjay’s solo hero action film after a long time. On the other hand, TV actor-turned-film star, Prachi too gets a solo outing with the remake of a south Indian hit, Saamy (2003).
Unusual meter: 8/10

Farhan Akhtar (39) and Vidya Balan (35)
Film: Shaadi Ke Side Effects
What’s new: Of late, Vidya has emerged as the ‘female hero’ in Bollywood and has created a niche for herself with films like The Dirty Picture (2011) and Kahaani (2012). On the other hand, Farhan is also known for his out-of-the-box movie choices such as Rock On!! (2008), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. It will be interesting to see the two meet in the rom-com.
What’s interesting: Vidya replaces Mallika Sherawat while Farhan takes over from Rahul Bose, both of whom starred in Pyaar Ke Side Effects (2006), in the second part of the sleeper hit.
Unusual meter: 6/10

Sonam Kapoor (28) and Dhanush (30)
Film: Raanjhnaa
What’s new: Rajinikanth’s son-in-law makes his Bollywood debut with Anand Rai’s romantic drama that will showcase Bollywood’s fashion diva Sonam in a very non-glamourous avatar. Till date, while Sonam has come to be largely known for her immaculate style sense, Dhanush is famous as a strong performer in several films including his National Award-winning act in Aadukalam (2011).
What’s interesting: Apparently, the ‘Kolaveri di’ singer goes behind the mike again for a song. Also, Sonam’s JNU student avatar will be a big break from her usual chic look in films and otherwise.
