Sanjay Dutt spent one night at Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail after he surrendered before the TADA court on Thursday. He will be shifted to Yerwada Jail in Pune any time to complete his prison term.
But, he won’t be allowed to smoke electronic cigarettes in Pune jail’s egg-shaped cell, where he will undergo the remainder term.
The cell with sunken floor is considered to be the safest in the jail, sources said in view of apprehensions about safety raised by the actor.
However, there is one relief. The court has allowed him to get homemade food and has agreed to his appeal to be provided with a thin mattress and pillow and medicines for a month.
Later, the jail authorities will review whether these allowances be continued.
Sanjay Dutt had surrendered in the TADA court on Thursday amidst eagerly waiting fans and photojournalists vying with each other to take the best shot.
He took almost 25-odd minutes to reach the court after alighting from his car.
He was accompanied by his wife Manyata and sister Priya Dutt, a Congress parliamentarian.
In March, the Supreme Court had upheld Mr Dutt's conviction in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case for illegal possession of weapons, including one AK 56 rifle.
The court reduced his trial court sentence of six years to five years and ordered 42 months in jail.
He has already served 18 months 20 years ago, part of it at the Yerawada Jail.
