Asha Bhosle's daughter Varsha, a singer and a columnist committed suicide at about 12.15 pm on Monday in Mumbai. TV reports suggest that she shot herself at singer's residence Prabhu Kunj in Peddar Road. Varsha who was in her mid 50s was reportedly under depression since yesterday evening.
The Gamdevi police said that she shot herself, following which she was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.
The police suspect that the incident occurred as Varsha was suffering from depression and had even allegedly attempted to end her life earlier in 2008 and 2010. The police are on the spot and further probe is underway.
According to TV reports, Asha Bhosle was in Singapore at the time of the incident attending an awards function. The singer is on her way back now.
Varsha was divorced from freelance sports writer Hemant Kenkre.
Varsha who lent her voice for a couple of Hindi and Marathi films also appeared in some concerts with her mother. Apart from singing, Varsha wrote columns for The Sunday Observer, Gentleman magazine, The Times of India and Rediff.
Varsha completed her schooling from Hill Grange High School on Pedder Road, Mumbai, in 1974. She then studied Political Science at Elphinstone College.
