Aamir on a song in Delhi!

By Hindustan Times

New Delhi, Oct. 19 -- After raising his voice for their issues with his social-message reality show Satyamev Jayate, actor Aamir Khan took the mike on Thursday to croon for members of the All India Valmiki Samaj. The actor sang his hit number, Papa Kehte Hain from his debut flick Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, with singer Udit Narayan. He was present at the Talkatora Stadium with Uday Shankar, CEO, Star India to receive an award for the show from the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, Government of India.

Aamir's presence at the event is noteworthy as he is infamous for not accepting awards. Ironically, barring his singing stint, Aamir was hardly given an opportunity to speak, till over 90 minutes after his arrival. His presence, however, created chaos in the jam-packed stadium. People left their seats and rushed to the stage, screaming for his attention and clicking pictures on their cellphones. He obliged by waving at them and voluntarily signing an autograph and sending it to a fan via his bodyguard.

And when he spoke, he drew mass applause and whistles. "I am feeling very humbled and special after receiving such honour and respect. Our first prerogative was to first understand the issues that we thought could be highligted and then show them to make our society a better one in the show," he said. "People told us that we should drop the issue fearing backlash, court cases, etc. But I was adamant that if we don't do this then we are not doing Satyamev Jayate," he added. Others present at the event were Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, politicians Sushil Kumar Shinde and Kumari Selja, and activist Ambika Shukla.
